The Cortez shoe truly was the life line for Blue Ribbon Sports. BRS was trying everything in order to reproduce the Cortez under their own brand. It had acquired many users under the tiger Shoes brand. Therefore, the Nike Cortez was launched through an ad copy stating that they are exactly the same as Tiger Cortez.

In fact, Nike Cortez looked very much like Tiger Cortez from its design to coloring. This incident worsened Onitsuka Tiger Shoes and BRS’s business relationship and later led to a court trial. The only main difference is the insole. Nike Cortez uses a sole made by the manufacturer Spenco and this insole that resembles a wet suit is smooth to the touch. The wearer can easily slide the foot into the shoe and it provides comfort. For the coming decade and onwards, many Nike shoes came to utilize the Spenco insole.

The first Leather Cortez was made in Taiwan as a sample and the quality was not satisfactory. Nowadays, Taiwan is the core of the shoe production industry but at that time, there were still big technological gaps in comparison to Japan or the U.S. However, Production also started in Japan the following year and product quality improved. People were able to buy the new Cortez, which was as good as the Tiger Cortez.

The Far Eastern athletic manufacturer, which was unknown in Europe and the U.S. seemed to have listened and respected the opinion of one of America’s best track and field coach. In the late 1960‘s Bill Bowerman was no longer a mere agent for the Onitsuka Tiger Shoes. Bowerman provided his know-hows and greatly contributed to Onitsuka’s development of running shoes. There were numerous Onitsuka shoes that were produced from his ideas, but the most well-known is the Cortez.

Cortez was an outstanding training shoe. The focus was places on its cushioning. Up until then , European running shoes, which consisted the majority of the market had hard soles with insufficient cushioning. Because European running courses were not paved and the road surfaces were soft, not much emphasis was placed on cushioning. However in the U.S., many people ran on asphalt-surfaced roads, so Bowerman thought that shoes with softer soles were necessary to protect the athletes.

Cortez is equipped with a full length midsole form heel to toe. In addition, the heel section has one more layer that consists of a soft material, which results in a three layer structure. This training shoe with excellent cushioning immediately became a favorite among runners and succeeded in spreading Onitsuka and BRS’s names all over North America. However, their relationship soured and Onitsuka lost its right to use the shoe name through a court trial. Later on, their product name was changed to Corsair but the “other Cortez” is still the main product of O

The birth of “the running company –Nike”

In 1957, Nike’s future co-founders Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight met in the University of Oregon. Knight was a middle-distance runner on the track and field team under head coach Bowerman, who later became head coach of an US Olympic team. The development of their relationship changed the world of sports forever.

Blue Ribbon Sports, as Nike was formerly known, began promoting its first line of Nike shoes during the 1972 US Olympic Trials. In particular, the introduction of the Moon series immediately attracted the attention of runners for its waffle sole design that enhanced cushioning. Ever since then, Nike rooted as a running company and has made a continued presence at US marathon, track and field events both big and small.

In 1973, US record-holder Steve Prefontaine was the first professional athlete to wear Nike running shoes. Many other running athletes soon followed and created a phenomenon that extended beyond track and field. As the entire athletic world began to take notice, athletes such as Olympic marathon gold medalist Jon Anderson and tennis player Ilie Nastase also competed in Nike athletic shoes.
